Two suspected witches stoned and burnt in DR Congo
In the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, two women accused of practicing witchcraft and killing multiple people were publicly stoned and their bodies burned, according to residents on Monday.
The 60- and 65-year-old ladies were apprehended late on Sunday in the South Kivu village of Nyamutiri, according to Andre Byaduniya, the leader of the local civil society.
An official from a neighbouring district named Timothee Bakanirwa stated: “The army and police could not intervene in time to save these two women.”
The Association of Women in Media (AFEM)’s Nelly Adidja said that 33 women were slain in South Kivu, Congo, last year due to suspected sorcery.
“Many others have been chased out of their villages,” she continued.
