Suspected cultists kill vigilante member in Rivers
Uche Orukwo, a vigilante, was assassinated by gunmen who were suspected of being cultists at Obidanso shoreline, Mile 1, Diobu in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
On Saturday, April 7, 2024, at around 9 p.m., members of the Diobu Vigilante Group, or DVG, assaulted the waterfront with the help of police officers responding to a report regarding the activities of cult groups.
According to a source who talked with Punch, the accused gang members set up an ambush to target a rival group in a conflict between two groups of the suspected cult organisation known as “Deygbam” that was still going on.
But when the suspected cultists spotted the security operatives, they opened fire, and a bullet hit the vigilante member named Orukwo, resulting in his death,” the source said.
The spokesperson of the State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the killing of Orukwo, adding that investigation was ongoing to arrest the perpetrators.
“Our men are in the area to ensure that those behind the shooting are apprehended and brought to justice,” she added.
