Man Sentenced To 70 Years Imprisonment For Spitting At Police Officers In The U.S
A guy who spit on Lubbock police officers during an arrest in May has received a sentence of 70 years in prison in the United States.
According to the New York Post, 36-year-old Larry Pearson was arrested by police on suspicion of domestic violence after he allegedly struck a lady in the face multiple times.
Additionally, according to the investigation, Pearson left his victim with “multiple visible injuries.” When the victim wasn’t immediately taken into custody, Larry allegedly became enraged and began kicking the police cruiser’s door.
According to the New York Post, Pearson spit at two police officers when they opened the door to demand that he stop and continued to do so while in the Lubbock County Detention Center.
During the trial’s closing arguments, prosecutor Jessica Gorman asked the jury to “send a message” to both the suspect and society with its sentencing.
Larry had prior convictions for aggravated robbery and family violence, Gorman said. As a result, he faced a minimum sentence of 25 years.
“If you’re going to live the life of crime, you’re going to do that among other criminals (in prison),” Gorman told the court.
Jim Shaw, Pearson’s defense attorney, told jurors that the sentencing was for a “simple misdemeanor” that got out of control.
“You’re not going to get 70 years for something like this when you’ve never been in trouble before,” Gorman said.
