Man arrested and paraded for killing monkey in Awka
On Wednesday, March 6, Awka natives took into custody a man who had killed a monkey.
In Awka, monkeys are revered creatures, and killing them is prohibited.
In a widely shared video, the man who was detained for murdering a monkey in the village admitted that he had lived in Awka for 24 years and that he was aware that it is forbidden to kill and eat monkeys.
He clarified that he had set a trap in the bush in the hopes of catching more bush meat, but instead of killing the monkey on purpose, the monkey had fallen into the trap.
He begged for mercy saying: “I know I have committed, please do not kill me, but you can take me anywhere you want.”
The indigenes eventually agreed to spare his life, but told him that the community will take steps to appease the god of the land to avoid repercussions.
