Charges of R. Kelly’s Sexual Assault Were Dismissed at The Request of The Chicago Prosecutor
Fresh from our reliable source Naijaphobia Blog – At the request of a Chicago prosecutor who claimed Monday that “justice has been served,” a judge has officially dropped the sex abuse allegations against disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly. Kelly’s convictions in federal court cases in 2021 and 2022 have all but guaranteed he’ll be behind bars for decades to come.
A day after Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx declared that her office will not be pursuing indictments accusing Kelly of sexually abusing four people, three of whom were minors, the dismissal came at a brief hearing on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.
In a statement, Foxx stated, “I realize how difficult it was for these victims to come forward and tell their tales.” “I salute their bravery and have nothing but the utmost respect for everyone who spoke out. We believe that justice has been done, even though the outcome may not have been what they had hoped for in light of the penalties Mr. Kelly is now facing.”
She continued, “My office will focus its resources on pursuing justice for further sexual assault victims who lack a documentary’s ability to expose their offenders.”
Kelly, real name Robert Sylvester Kelly, was found guilty of racketeering and sex trafficking in New York in September 2021, and he is now serving a 30-year jail sentence. In addition, he will be punished in federal court in Chicago the following month after being found guilty of counts including child enticement and child pornography in September. In the latter case, Kelly, 56, may spend 10 to 90 years in prison.
Although allegations of sexual misconduct had dogged Kelly for a while, it wasn’t until the #MeToo movement gained traction and the Lifetime documentary Surviving R. Kelly was broadcast that public pressure to act seriously started to build. 2019 saw the announcement of the Cook County indictment before the federal cases in Chicago and New York.
Kelly’s legal counsel did not reply to EW’s Monday request for comment.
