Fabian Edwards beat out one of Bellator’s biggest names for the one-night title.
Edwards defeated former middleweight champion Gergard Musasi in the main event of Bellator 296 on Friday. Edwards won a unanimous decision 49-46 on all three judges’ lists at the Accor Arena in Paris.
After the main event, it was announced that Edwards was now the next contender for the Bellator middleweight title, where he will face champion Johnny Ebron on September 23 in Dublin. Eblen was brought into the cage and the two had a violent confrontation, forcing security to intervene and separate them.

Both Mousassi and Edwards were very cautious in the first 10 minutes. Edwards seemed to push the action harder and was able to gain considerable top control on lap 2. Edwards fired two shots – the first with a kick to the groin and the second with an illegal knee to the head.
Scoring the third round was much easier. Edwards found his range and seemed to throw more clean shots than Mousassi. His punches were also louder, more jarring to Musassi.
Edwards carried that same momentum going into the 4th round. Like his brother, UFC champion Leon Edwards, Edwards killed Musassi with a hard, accurate one-shot. Mousassi did get knocked out and took control of the fight briefly, but was outscored by Edwards for the most part. Edwards was actually brought down in the final 10 seconds.
The final lap was Edwards’ biggest. He controlled his feet and managed to knock down his opponent in the mid-section. Once on the ground, he backed away and held that position until the final bell. It was a clear win for Edwards.
