Assistant Referee Elbows Liverpool’s Robertson
After the halftime whistle of Sunday’s Premier League match against Arsenal, assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis punched Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson in the face.
The linesman pushed Robertson’s chin with his elbow as the Scotland skipper approached.
Referee Paul Tierney issued Robertson a yellow card despite his vehement protests.
As Roberto Firmino’s 87th-minute header prevented the leads from winning the championship for the first time since 2004, Liverpool salvaged a 2-2 draw. At halftime, Arsenal led 2-1.
Following a pledge to evaluate the event by the organization that regulates referees, PGMOL, Hatzidakis now faces an investigation into his behavior.
The statement read, “PGMOL is aware of an incident involving Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson and assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis at half-time during the Liverpool vs. Arsenal game at Anfield.”
“After the game is over, we will fully review the situation.”
Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, acknowledged that no apology had been extended to him or Robertson by the officials.
Regarding the event, Klopp stated, “I didn’t see it. I was told that the images speak for themselves.
Aleksandar Mitrovic, a striker for Fulham, was given an eight-game suspension this week for hitting referee Chris Kavanagh during the Cottagers’ FA Cup loss to Manchester United last month.
