In the UEFA Champions League and Europa League over the past four seasons, German Bundesliga team Borussia Dortmund has been quite radioactive for numerous elite European teams.
In the first and second legs of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 in the 2018/19 season, respectively, Tottenham Hotspurs defeated Borussia Dortmund by scores of 3-0 and 1-0. After eliminating Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 16, Tottenham Hotspur advanced to the Final of the UEFA Champions League that season, but Liverpool defeated the North London club in the Final.
PSG eliminated Borussia Dortmund from the UEFA Champions League in the Round of 16 during the 2019/2020 season. In Germany, Borussia Dortmund prevailed 2-1 in the first leg, but PSG defeated them 2-0 in the second leg to advance on aggregate. PSG lost to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League final that season.
Chelsea won their second UEFA Champions League trophy in the following season, 2020/21, when they defeated Manchester City in the final of the competition in Porto. In the UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals that season, Manchester City defeated Borussia Dortmund both at home and away. After that, Chelsea defeated the Citizens in the Final.
Rangers eliminated Borussia Dortmund from the UEFA Europa League this past season. That season, Rangers made it to the final, but Frankfurt defeated them to win the title.
Permit me to point out the pattern in case you haven’t connected it yet. In the subsequent four seasons, all of the teams that led to Borussia Dortmund’s elimination from the UEFA Champions League and Europa League advanced to the Final but ultimately lost. In 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, it happened to Rangers, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspurs, and PSG, respectively.
