People were concerned about the fate of the Iranian footballer Amir Nasr-Azadani after the public call for his execution for participating in a women’s rights protest. Thankfully, reports have shown that Amir will be held in prison rather than put to death.
UK SUN reports that the footballer, who was 26 years old at the time, was given a 26-year prison sentence in Iran for participating in the nationwide protest that followed the tragic death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old young woman who was killed in police custody for not properly covering her hijab.
Nasr would be sentenced to 16 years in prison for participating in the murder of three security guards, which was a sin against God; the remaining 10 years would be served for the other two offenses committed during the protest. According to some reports, the footballer’s family was coerced into speaking out for their own safety, and the other three people who were suspected of killing the security guard were given death sentences, while another was sentenced to two years in prison. On state television in December, Nasr and the other accused read a “forced” confession.
Nasr, who played for Iranian teams Rah-Ahan and Gol-e Rayhan, was supposed to be put to death for his part in the murders of a Colonel and two other security officers. However, it turned out that he wasn’t near the scene. However, he was responsible for a few hours of slogan chanting during the protest.
