Shaking his head, he gave her a quick glance. As Angela got ready for what was to come, panic overcame her. Only kids are able to walk. It was a waste of time to beg, contend, and invoke his compassion.
She must decide whether to keep the family together and run the chance of the children being abducted by the dictatorship, or whether to let the kids run away since she worries she might never see them again. She saw the kids go in tears.
Years later, Angela fled to America, leaving behind her husband and the island she loved so much. Driven to a foreign land, she struggles to make ends meet. She worked long hours to rebuild her life and win her kids back.
As a musically gifted young girl in Cuba in the 1930s, she had a strong desire to become a professional composer and singer, but was held back by her father’s traditional views. Undeterred, Angela continued to write songs that documented her rich and turbulent life. What starts out as a dream quickly turns into a way of coping with life’s unbearable tragedies. Sadly, once Angela’s life settled down, she faced the death of her beloved husband and daughter from devastating cancer.
Her music mourns the pain of loss with tender intimacy and fierce defiance, while celebrating love, family, and the joys of life. Her heartfelt songs and captivating voice will forever be hidden, save for the passion and determination of her grandson, film composer Carlos José Alvarez, who felt compelled to Protect Angela’s legacy before it’s too late.
Inspired by his grandmother’s dream of sharing her music with the world, Carlos assembled a world-class lineup of Grammy-winning musicians who came together to record their music for the world to hear.
Now in her 90s, Angela Alvarez is finally living out a lifelong dream. All you’re about to hear is… the soundtrack to an incredible life.
As if that wasn’t enough… Filmmakers Paul Toogood and Lloyd Stanton saw the beauty in Angela’s story and music and made Miss Angela a documentary about her incredible life.
