After the shooting in Nashville, Biden calls for a ban on assault weapons
According to the White House, six people, including three children, were killed in a school shooting on Monday in Nashville, Tennessee. The president of the United States, Joe Biden, has called on Congress to pass a ban on assault weapons.
“To stop gun violence, we need to do more. Biden stated at the White House, “It’s tearing our communities apart.” I urge Congress to pass my assault weapons ban once more.”
Police initially stated that the Nashville shooter, a 28-year-old man, had at least two semi-automatic rifles and a handgun, before revising their statement to say the shooter had one semi-automatic rifle and two handguns. The shooter was shot and killed by officers at the scene.
Democrat Joe Biden has repeatedly called for a reexamination of the ban on assault weapons as well as tighter restrictions on the sale of guns, both of which must be approved by Congress.
The Republicans control the House of Representatives; While Republicans are in charge, it is unlikely that any new legislation regarding gun safety will be passed.
“How many more children must be killed before Republicans in Congress will act to pass a ban on assault weapons, close loopholes in our background check system, or make safe gun storage a requirement?” Before Biden spoke, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.
