1 Dead And 4 Injured In Gunshot At New Orleans Mardi Gas Parade (Watch Video)
NEW ORLEANS Authorities in New Orleans said that a shooting during a Mardi Gras parade left one person dead and four others injured.
Shortly after the shooting, which was reported around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, police said they also arrested a suspect.
According to the department, there were one child, three males, and two females among the victims. The New Orleans Police Department reported that all five victims were rushed to the hospital, where one of the male victims was later declared dead.
Hans Ganthier, the chief deputy, stated at a news conference on Monday morning that the four additional casualties were hospitalized but in stable condition.
The incident took place outside of the crowded French Quarter during the Krewe of Bacchus parade in a neighborhood. As gunshots were heard, the path was crowded with families with young children taking in the procession, according to witnesses who spoke to WWL-TV.
As individuals fled, sought safety, and attempted to shield their kids, chaos followed.
Although one person was caught, Ganthier was unsure if there were any further suspects and stated that the shooting was still being looked into. At the location, two guns were also found.
Ganthier stated, “This was really not something we wanted to see. “We continue to work toward making this Mardi Gras safe, which is something we truly desired.”
Following the shooting, the superkrewe of Bacchus was momentarily put on hold on the 1500 block of St. Charles Avenue.
